U.S. Senate Republicans were trying to pass President Donald Trump's sweeping tax-cut and spending bill on Monday, despite divisions within the party about its expected $3.3 trillion hit to the nation's debt pile.

Entering the final stretch of an arduous process, the Republican-controlled Senate began voting Monday on amendments to President Donald Trump's massive tax cut and spending bill, with the goal of passing it later in the day.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said the “hardest choices” for Republicans are still to come. His side plans to bring “amendment after amendment after amendment to the floor, so Republicans can defend their billionaire tax cuts and so they can try to explain their massive cuts to Medicaid to people back home.”
