It may have been worth it to avoid a massive tax hike, but the failure to get spending under control will come back to haunt Republicans.

The 2017 bill brought about sweeping, albeit temporary, changes to the tax code. Provisions which nearly doubled the standard deduction, upped the monetary thresholds for tax brackets, lowered the top tax rate and bumped up the child tax credit were set to expire at the end of 2025.

The House of Representatives approved the fiscal year 2026 federal budget bill, commonly referred to as "one big, beautiful bill," with a 218 to 214 vote on Thursday afternoon.
