Shi Zhengli led the research, one of China's leading virologists, who has worked on bat coronaviruses for years and has gained the nickname "batwoman" for her pioneering efforts.

The study was led by Shi Zhengli, Chinese virologist from the controversial Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), where the COVID-19 was alleged to have emanated from.

Shi Zhengli, 60, earned herself the nickname of China's "batwoman" as one of the world's leading scientists working on bat coronaviruses in Wuhan.
