Prime Minister Mark Carney, seeking to reduce Canada's economic ties to the United States, on Monday met the heads of the 10 provinces as part of a push to slash the time needed to approve mining and energy projects.

Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with premiers in Saskatoon today to discuss efforts to knock down trade barriers and fast-track projects deemed as benefiting the national interest. Carney had asked the 13 provincial and territorial leaders to propose major infrastructure and energy projects that could be fast-tracked for approval under a new federal process.

Unity was a recurring theme coming out of the first ministers' meeting in Saskatoon on Monday. Premiers met with Prime Minister Mark Carney to pitch their ideas for "nation-building projects" and mostly seemed pleased with the progress that was made.
