CANBERRA -- Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles met with his Papua New Guinea (PNG) counterpart Billy Joseph in Brisbane on Thursday to open talks on a formal treaty-level defense agreement.

It will create a framework for the nation’s defence forces to co-operate across all areas of security, and is likely to open the way for a greater Australian military presence in PNG.
