The race for the Most Valuable Player award this 2024-25 season is heating up, particularly between Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. A poll conducted by ESPN put the Oklahoma City Thunder guard in the lead. Nonetheless, it might be too early to proclaim him as the MVP winner.

Last season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came close to winning the coveted NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, but he was surpassed by Nikola Jokić. According to reporter Sam Amick from The Athletic, the Oklahoma City Thunder star was “disappointed” by not securing the honor.

At this point, it seems there's not much more Nikola Jokić can do to win his fourth NBA MVP. It seems like the decision that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would win the award was made a while ago. Though, a ridiculous record-setting 61-point triple-double by Jokić on Tuesday night did at least move the odds.

Over the last week, Gilgeous-Alexander dropped 48 points on the Pistons (and Cade Cunningham), then followed up with 31 (and eight assists vs. one turnover) on the Bucks (and Giannis Antetokounmpo). Both were victories and in those games against two players on the Kia MVP Ladder and he was the most important player on the floor.
