Public Health Sudbury and Districts says it's preparing for the prospect of outbreaks of avian flu in birds in the region. The virus has been detected in migratory wild birds, as well as poultry and pet birds. There is concern it could mutate, and become transmissible to humans and cause serious illness.

The virus was detected in a backyard flock in the U.S. territory, as well as in commercial poultry in Maryland and two Canadian provinces.

The death comes at a time when the H5N1 virus has recently undergone an unusual mutation that is causing concern to the World Health Organization.
