President Donald Trump has signed an executive order challenging a 1989 Supreme Court decision that protects flag burning as free speech.

"If you burn a flag, you get one year in jail," Trump said. His executive order aims to sidestep the First Amendment.

Trump’s executive order allows federal agencies to prosecute anyone who desecrates the American flag. The order contends that burning the flag is “uniquely offensive and provocative” and that it is the “clearest possible expression of opposition to the political union that preserves our rights, liberty, and security.”
