Enbridge Inc.’s long-simmering dispute with the state of Michigan over an oil pipeline that runs under the Straits of Mackinac is headed for the U.S. Supreme Court after years of legal battles and the intervention of Canada’s government.

The U.S. Supreme Court will review whether Enbridge Energy properly removed a case to federal court that was filed against it by the state of Michigan

Last year, a court of appeals ruled that Enbridge’s request to move the case to federal court came too late in the process, a decision that the company disagrees with. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case sometime after their next term begins in October. A ruling could come any time after that, as late as June 2026.
