U.S. Air Force aerial refueling aircraft are heading for the Middle East amid an escalating war between Israel and Iran and the possibility that U.S. forces could also become involved, according to flight data tracking sources.
For much of the 20th century, the US and Iran maintained friendly relations. During the Cold War, Washington depended on the Shah of Iran to counter Soviet influence in the oil-rich Middle East.
The resolution requires congressional debate and a vote before the United States takes any offensive measures against Iran.
Iran is often portrayed as one of the world’s most dangerous actors, but with its attacks on Iranian defenses, nuclear sites and proxy militias, Israel has exposed a compromised and weakened adversary.
U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), who serves on both the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, has introduced a war powers resolution aimed at addressing the growing violence in the Middle East.
Sen. Lindsey Graham urged President Donald Trump to go "all-in" for Israel in its conflict with Iran, while other lawmakers prefer a diplomatic end to the conflict to prevent further escalation.
