In remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., Elevé Dance Theater will host a dance workshop to bring the community together while honoring Black history.

The holiday falls on the third Monday of January. A bill to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a federal holiday was introduced on April 8, 1968 — four days after King was assassinated, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Westport Country Playhouse, the Bruce Museum, the Ferguson Library, UConn's Stamford campus and Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art are hosting events.

Government offices are closed for the holiday, while several museums offer free entry and special programming to honor the civil rights leader.

1966: The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. told reporters in Chicago that he was working on a three-phase plan to mobilize the city’s roughly 1 million Blacks. King selected a “typical ghetto apartment on the West Side” at 1550 S. Hamlin Ave. to serve as his base for the following year.
