OWASSO, Okla. (AP) — A federal investigation into an Oklahoma school district launched after the death of a nonbinary student has led to the school agreeing to develop policies to prevent sexual discrimination and harassment, federal officials announced Wednesday.

Following the death of Nex Benedict, the US Department of Education found that the school failed to address the hostile environment.

Owasso Public Schools, the district where Nex Benedict died following a fight at school, violated federal law, according to the Education Department.

The district must take corrective action after it was found to violate the rights of LGBTQ+ students and others who were bullied.

After Nex Benedict died in February, the U.S. Department of Education found repeated violations of federal anti-harassment policies at Owasso schools.
