President Donald Trump's proposed NASA budget released Friday puts crewed missions to the Moon and Mars front and center -— slashing science and climate programs as it seeks to shrink the agency's funding by nearly a quarter.

The budget threatens to kill Lunar Gateway and the Mars Sample Return mission, along with phasing out the gigantic SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft.

Despite the overall reduction, NASA human space exploration initiatives would receive a $647 million increase in the proposed budget. The White House wants to allocate more than $7 billion for lunar exploration and direct $1 billion in new investments to “Mars-focused programs.”
