Utility Duke Energy on Tuesday beat Wall Street expectations for first quarter revenue and profit, helped by higher electricity rates, retail sales and a colder winter.

The utility, which delivers electricity and natural gas services across the Carolinas, Florida, Ohio and other regions, reported net income of $1.36 billion, or $1.76 a share, compared with $1.01 billion, or $1.44 a share, in the same quarter last year.
