Asma Assad, the former Syrian first lady and wife of deposed President Bashar al-Assad is reportedly under medical observation after being diagnosed with leukemia. According to several media reports,

Syria's presidency announced that the then-first lady of the Middle Eastern country had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia - an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and the blood.

Assad is reported to have flown out of the country to an unknown destination in the early hours of Sunday. The president’s flight ends his family’s 54-year stranglehold on the country which began when his father Hafez al-Assad seized power in a bloodless coup in November 1970.
